Athletics and insurance have long been a major part of Kelly's life. Kelly coached Division III football at Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey) from 1979 to 2004. As the Defensive Coordinator for 18 years, he touted 7 NJAC Championships, 4 NCAA Playoff appearances and a defense ranked #1 in 1990. Around that time, he was approached by Doug Borden and his father Jack and entered the insurance business after attending the Drake University School of Insurance.

He founded the Sports Group at Borden Perlman in 1990 and has grown the book of business nationwide to become one of the most recognized firms in the country. Kelly serves on the Mercer County Sports Authority Council, and as Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Football Foundation. He is the recipient of the 2003 TCNJ Distinguished Service Award and the 2009 DVC Distinguished American Award. Kelly lives in Hopewell Township, NJ.
